We asked RU students what they’re giving up for Lent
What if you’re just giving up?
It’s widely known by now that Rutgers is one of the most diverse universities in the nation. There are students of all different backgrounds and religions, and with the Christian season of Lent in full swing, there are plenty of people giving things up whether Christian or not.
Here are what RU students are giving up, from the devout to the hilarious.
Elijah, sophomore

“I’m giving up complaining and my bad attitude! I’m trying to be more conscious about how I react to everything and surroundings.”
Shawn, senior, VP of the Catholic Student Association

“For lent this year I wanted to simplify my life. I decided to give up Snapchat, Instagram, and alcohol in order to remove these distractions during this season of Lent and have more time to focus on and grow in my faith.”
Danielle, sophomore

“I’m giving up going out to eat because I started eating out so much just because of how much I’ve grown to hate the dining halls and just for fun. But my bank account is really suffering and I really needed to give up something that would really be a sacrifice. I’m also working on my prayer life.”
Amber, senior

“I’m going vegetarian!”
Nicolette, freshman

“I am Greek Orthodox, and for Lent this year I gave up fish, oil, dairy, and all junk/sweet food! I eat lots of fruit, vegetables and protein powder. Depending on the ingredients I have vegan burgers. I have done it for the past three years, but this year is most difficult because being part of the Women’s Rowing Team at RU has really been taxing since it is such a cardio endured sport.”
Ari, freshman

“I’m Jewish, so my usual line is that I gave up giving things up for Lent, for Lent.”
