Everyone wants the Philly Zoo’s newborn gorilla to be named Harambe
The Philly Zoo is welcoming its newborn gorilla with a naming contest . . . oh boy
On Friday, the Philadelphia Zoo welcomed a newborn baby western lowland gorilla into the world and soon after decided to have naming contest. Everyone with access to the internet probably knows what happened next:
Never change, Philly, never change.
The zoo says it will select a few names once staffers determine the baby’s gender. Unfortunately, it clarified on its website yesterday that participants will only be able to choose their favorite of several names selected by keeper staff, so it’s unlikely the newborn will share a namesake with Cincinnati’s martyred silverback gorilla, whose memory lives on through memes directed at the Cincinnati Zoo’s old Twitter account.
After those steps are all sorted out, the public will be able to vote on the name, so be sure to follow @phillyzoo on Twitter for more updates.
