How are you celebrating 4/20?
The most official of the unofficial holidays
People. Love. Weed.
Weed culture has progressed to the point where 4/20 is pretty much a national holiday at campuses across the country. And we all know college students will get high for pretty much anything, and why not? Marijuana has the ability to make Panda Express taste like authentic Asian cuisine, and to convince Art History majors that they’ll be financially successful.
When Crawfest happened this past weekend, I figured the stoners would be out in full force to satisfy their munchies. Before I even had the chance to roam the quad, a friend of mine suggested I interview his perpetually-high friend.
For the purposes of this article, all of the interview subjects’ names have been changed.
James Blunt, Freshman, Chemistry
So, what is your plan for 4/20?
“Well, I plan to skip all my classes and at a constant high all day. First things first – wake up late, take a bong rip, shower, take a second bong rip, and straight to the Xbox for some all day “Call of Duty” grind. Then, hit up some of my other smoking buddies and pick up some munchies, and watch funny movies until night. I hope to get sushi for dinner – while blazed, of course – and then smoke again before I leave. That’s my ideal 4/20.”
Walks to LBC – I quickly discovered that there were more sky-high Tulane students than I had ever imagined.
Sally Sativa, Junior, Finance and Management
Do you smoke? Oh, fuck yeah.
How much? Whenever I see my bong.
Are you high right now? Yeah, its Crawfest.
How are you planning on celebrating 4/20? OK. So, I’m going to smoke every hour, like every o clock. I deserve it.
Are you stocked up right now? Are you kidding? I stocked up last 4/20 for this 4/20. By the way, are people going to know me, Mr. Journalist? I’ll kill you if this says my name. Where do you live, I’ll find you.
S. Naps Daily, Freshman, Business Undecided
Do you smoke? Yeah. I love to smoke. (Slurps crawfish).
Are you high right now? (uncontrolled giggling) Yes.
How often do you smoke? Er’y day, son.
Are you doing anything different for 4/20? Yeah, I’m going to smoke all the weeds. Wednesdays I have like one class I got to go to so I’m just going to get high for it. Then, I’ll just smoke again after class.
After wandering around for about an hour, and eating my way through pounds of crawfish, I found a needle in the haystack.
Rabbi, Freshman, Neuroscience
Do you smoke? Nope.
FINALLY. So, how are you enjoying Crawfest sober? I actually love spending time with people under the influence, its a great time.
I continued my interviews throughout the weekend with no signs of slowing down.
Daniel Dabber, Sophomore, Communications
So, smoking or nah? Yes, every day. This 4/20, I plan on starting my day with an edible. I’ve already begun rolling a multitude of blunts and spliffs for hotboxing.
Are you planning on going to class? I’ll likely attend all of my classes, sit in the back, and try not to laugh.
Lydia, Sophomore, English
What are your smoking habits? I smoke on occasion, when the mood strikes. Typically, its like once a month.
So are you planning on celebrating 4/20? I think I’m celebrating, yeah. I’m probably going to watch “Harry Potter” high, haha.
Is it going to effect your normal schedule? No, I will probably just end my night with a nice J and some expelliarmus. Weed helps my arthritis so this doctor recommends it, bless up.
I wonder if Harry Potter would approve of weed, he took some questionable herbs in his time at Hogwarts…
T-Rip, Senior, Psych major, bruh
How often do you smoke? I smoke a lot less than I used to. However, for 4/20 I am going back to my roots.
Care to elaborate? I’m going to start by taking an edible in the morning, then hit a blunt after my first class. I’m going to take some bong rips after my second class, and do a dab or two after my third class. After my final class of the day, I’m going to ride it out with vaping for an hour and a half until 4:20 PM, at which point I’m going to smoke a few J’s to end the day right.
Aren’t you worried about your classes? I really don’t think it will affect my classes at all, as my memory and executive functioning are pretty unaffected by weed… But we’ll see.
From full blown stoners to passive smokers, 4/20 seems pretty appealing to everyone. If you’re planning on partaking in the celebrations, just know your own limits and make sure to take care of your academic priorities first.
And now, a closing statement from T-Rip:
“I just want to add, we should legalize weed federally by removing it as a schedule 1 drug, where it is currently classified alongside drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Weed is clearly less harmful both medically and socially than any other drugs in that class. Go blaze up, kids.”
