What it’s like to have the perfect roommate
An ode to William
I have the perfect roommate. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “How can you be so sure he’s the perfect roommate? I mean I HAVE the perfect roommate!” Well, to that’d I’d say this: you’re wrong.
My roommate’s name is William Gentry, and he has been given the award (by me) for having the most English name imaginable. But there’s so much more to him than his rather white name.
I have a list, yes a list, of all the reasons he is the big, burly-beefcake of a man I see him as.
He’s an engineer (major)
That’s right, this sexy piece of atoms is an engineering major, Biomedical to be exact. So we often build things in the room. And by “we” I mean he builds things and I help with gathering materials.
The other great thing about having an engineering major as a roommate is that he’s good at math and science and actually ENJOYS them. I have a tutor basically 24/7, and he doesn’t mind at all (as long as ginger ale is provided occasionally).
He’s also the “go-to” guy of the floor when something breaks. Bed frame is weird? Knock on our door. Fridge is acting up? Knock on our door. Girlfriend dumped you? Well, thats the next section.

He’s easy to talk to
Everyone goes through existential crisis’s or emotional turmoil, I just happen to go through them more often. And I know that whenever I have one of my “episodes” (all I do is lie face down on the ground… hardly an episode), he’ll be there to tell me to toughen up, pat me on the back, and tell me I can do it.
Sometimes all I need is encouragement, and all the times he’ll be there.
Glamour shot.
He’s a deep thinker
Him, his girlfriend, other friends and I are often engaging in rather deep subjects of conversation. William always has the best insights, the best knowledge of the subject, and he’s just fun to listen to.
We can discuss hot and controversial topics, but no matter how heated the discussion gets he can always keep his cool.
Deep in thought has two meanings in our dorm…
He can play music
You thought I was running out of reasons weren’t you? Well, you thought wrong. The guys a musical genius (in my humble opinion). He can play piano, and is self teaching himself guitar and ukulele, and he’s mentioned learning some brass/ wind instruments in the future. The guy never stops learning.
He did plays (like theater) in high school (most notably Phantom of the Opera), so whenever he takes a study break it’s not unlikely he’s going to grab his ukulele and start singing (you should hear his rendition of “Follow you into the dark”). We’re learning a song together right now, him on the piano me on the guitar-some more roomie bonding.
It’s quite beautiful, actually.
Artists need to keep hydrated
He’s a great friend
If you know the guy this one is self explanatory. Him and I met at our All-Star Football game over the summer and since then we’ve been basically glued at the hip.
He knows all my secrets, I know all of his, and they are forever sealed in our newly bought friendship bracelets.
Matching friendship bracelets
If you see William around campus, give him a high five, buy him a drink, or just say hi.
You just might see his godsend of a smile.
(I’m straight I swear).
Sorry ladies (and gentlemen) but he’s taken
