Racist tweet sent to mixed race girls from ‘UConn ’19’ account
‘These comments directly contradict our values as a university’, says dean
The Dean of Students Office is promising swift action will be taken after a racist tweet was sent to two mixed race girls from the Twitter account of a white male freshman.
The tweet, from an account with “UConn ’19” in the bio, reads: “I don’t know how a race can be ugly butttt… Black girls like you have roast beef pussy. I think that’s ugly XD.”
The account has since been set to private.
Susie Mitton Shannon, Associate Dean of Students, said: “This incredibly hurtful and disrespectful tweet is very disappointing to the University.
“We consider this highly offensive and are taking steps to address it swiftly and firmly.
“This matter will not be taken lightly. These comments directly contradict our values as a University.”
UConn is no stranger to racial conflict. Just last semester the campus was embroiled in two highly-publicized incidents.
PIKE was accused of hurling racial slurs at AKA, a historically African-American sorority, following a dispute at the Spirit Rock, and a “Black Lives Matter” message on the Spirit Rock was painted over to read “Lives Matter.”
These events culminated in the March for Civility and Equality, during which students marched to President Susan Herbst’s office demanding the Office of the Dean of Student’s and her administration take a more proactive role in mediating these conflicts.
