UConn will stand with Mizzou tomorrow afternoon
Hundreds expected
The protest against racism at the University of Missouri has sent shockwaves throughout college campuses nationwide, and this Thursday that shockwave hits UConn.
Hundreds of students are expected to gather on the Seal in front of Homer Babbidge tomorrow to wage their own battle against the pervading issues racism on campus.
The event is two-part: at 3pm there will be a speak-out in which students are encouraged to share their experiences with race relations at UConn, and at 7pm students will march across campus to bind marginalized groups on campus and show support for the protesters in Mizzou.
UConn is not the first school to join the fray against tone-deaf administrations; protests and rallies have been held at Ithaca College, Yale University, and Claremont McKenna College.
The combined protests have resulted in the resignation of university presidents at Claremont and Mizzou, and have cast a harsh spotlight on Yale for it’s administration’s handling of culturally appropriate student Halloween costumes, among other issues at the school.
The Mizzou rally follows a university-backed demonstration for Mahmoud Hashem, a transfer student from Egypt whose door decoration was written over with the message “…killed Paris” in reference to the brutal terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday. Hundreds of students, faculty and administrators poured out for the event to show support for marginalized Muslim students on campus.
And it was just one year ago today that hundreds of students marched in near-freezing whether to the office of President Susan Herbst, demanding administrative justice for marginalized black students on campus following a racial dispute between PIKE and the historically African-American sorority AKA.
Now, UConn students of all colors, beliefs and status find themselves marching and fighting for civility once more. However, this time around, the weather promises to be much warmer.
