The most beautiful spots on campus to visit in winter
Who’s up for some sightseeing and a little adventure?
Winter is by far the most ruthless season experienced on the UConn campus. Trudging through three feet of snow on un-shoveled sidewalks is not the way I want to be spending my Monday mornings at 8am. Not to mention the Arctic chill of a wind tunnel UConn is blessed with.
Those 10 degree days make walking to class seem like an episode of Survivor, Arctic edition. As much as we all loath being outside this time of the year, there are a few awe worthy spots on campus that frequently are bypassed on the cold sprint home after 9am classes. Although the weather might be cold, taking time to appreciate the beauty of our campus might be able to add a little warmth to the frigid winter months.
‘That lake thing by the Chemistry Building’
After an 8am Chemistry lecture, or a class in the “Timbuctoo” portion of campus, the last thing you want to do is take a nice long stroll back to your dorm in the arctic cold UConn weather….am I right? Although it may seem silly, this “Lake thing” next to the chemistry building is worth the extra time.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you’ve probably seen Swan Lake like a thousand times already, but have you taken the time to appreciate its beauty? As the winter rolls in and ices over this magnificent asset to campus, it provides us with not only a picturesque sight, but also maybe a little source of winter fun. Ice-skating anyone?
Mirror Lake
Bundle up, and go for a walk around this sparkling lake across from Arjona, and near the arts buildings on the UConn campus. You’ve all probably seen this large lake in passing, but it is worth a wander around. It’s a truly beautiful accent to campus, especially on a winter afternoon when the sun is glistening over the glossy ice covered water. Not to mention, this lake is located in direct sight of the infamous Moe’s. So grab a burrito to go, and take a stroll around this gem of the UConn campus.
Get on your Cowboy boots and lets venture to Horsbarn hill y’all
One of the most stunning spots on the UConn campus happens to be the smelliest of them all. Yes, we’re talking about Horsebarn Hill. That spot on campus where school is the last of your worries and the only thing on your mind is how many cows you will see. Set away from the bustiling main part of campus, this area is filled with some of the most beautiful sights.
What’s that barn that all of sororities and fraternities take cute pics in front of?
Directly across from Husky Village, on the tip top of Horsebarn hill lays this very rustic looking old red barn. Set far away from campus, taking a walk to this site may seem tedious but it certainly is worth your while. But beware—it is in fact a known spot for photo ops for many UConn gals and guys.
That majestic golden domed building – Wilbur Cross
Remember that place where you first went during orientation to get a really bad picture of yourself taken for your student ID? Yeah, that’s Wilbur Cross, and probably one of the most beautiful buildings on campus. With its golden dome and vast staircase leading out onto the great lawn, seen from the front end of campus, it is a true emblem of UConn’s beauty and stands proudly for all to see. Not to mention, they have some pretty amazing coffee in the café inside, so check it out.
Wait we can actually go in there?—The UConn Greenhouse
Yes, the answer is yes. The UConn Greenhouse is an indoor universe of wonder and beauty here on the UConn campus. Filled with hundreds of exotic flowers and plants of all shapes and sizes, the greenhouse is the place to be in the winter time. So if you are freezing your butt off while walking outside, take some time to visit this warm, indoor sight here at UConn.
Up for a true adventure? – Technically not on Campus, but worth the trip
Attention anyone with a car on campus, or anyone who is willing to take a little journey off campus. This is a must see spot located slightly off campus right of 195. This picturesque railroad track travels for miles and miles, through the city of Willimantic. When covered in snow it provides for a peaceful sight and a relaxing change of pace from the sometimes hectic bustle of campus.
