The coolest houses In Isla Vista

Did yours make the list?

January of last year, my housemates and I signed a lease for a unit on oceanside DP. In May, we were notified that we could not live in the unit because the cliff had eroded too much and the house needed to be reinforced. We had to find a house for a group of our size still available in May, so I did extensive research on housing and found some neat places. Here are the highlights.

6877 Del Playa

Enclosed by a state-of-the-art metal fence, this house is said to be occupied by one of our very own UCSB professors. The house is surrounded by a lush green lawn and boasts spectacular ocean views. The most distinguishing feature of the house, however, is that it appears to be on stilts. The house itself functions as a carport, with living spaces on the second and third floors, and 360 degree decks on both levels. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind house.

6874 Pasado

This palatial home is one of the last houses on Pasado and would look out of place in the more bustling areas of IV. The house boasts five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and a two-car garage, but is intended to house just seven tenants.

The area atop the stairs overlooks the living room, which has cathedral ceilings and enough space to play beer die inside.

The master bathroom offers double sinks and a resort-style bathtub. This is a home that would make your parents jealous.

6732 Del Playa

This imposing residence stands out in the midst of a bunch of cookie-cutter duplexes. Despite its location on the even-numbered side of the street, the house offers unobstructed views of the ocean from its spacious brick front patio. Each unit in the duplex enjoys a remodeled kitchen, extra-high ceilings, and massive garage. The fun continues in the backyard, where guests will find a 14-foot trampoline and high-end jacuzzi. A lenient, private landlord seals the deal.

948 Camino Del Sur

One of the original homes in Isla Vista, the Barn House has been extensively remodeled and expanded. Residents enjoy the option of single or double rooms, quirky paint colors, and a massive landscaped yard. The house’s location is also quite ideal; it occupies a corner lot and is in a quiet area of Isla Vista but still within short walking distance of everything. This is a place you’d want to stay for year after year.

6816 Sabado Tarde

The unique layout of this home allows for individual living in a group setting. There are three bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs, and the downstairs bedroom enjoys its own private kitchen in addition to the full kitchen upstairs.
A large balcony above the spacious three-car garage affords ocean views, even from Sabado Tarde. A large private backyard and vaulted ceilings complete this home.

6836 Fortuna

This beautifully remodeled home has never before been offered as a rental to students. Four bedrooms and three full bathrooms make up the sprawling, one-story floor plan. Spacious front and rear yards accompany the home. A huge storage room that houses laundry machines and a pool table is part of the deal. The landlord even includes a cleaning service in the rent!

998 Camino Lindo

One of the most unique buildings in Isla Vista, this house offers three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The obvious distinguishing feature of this home is its shape; it is essentially a huge dome, which earned it its nickname of the Dome House.
The home’s uniqueness continues inside, where residents enjoy a rustic cabin feel from the wooden walls, floors, and ceilings. Lofted bedrooms and a spacious yard on all four sides make this a house you’ll never forget.
