Everything that happens at the beginning of the UD semester

It’s good to be back in the 302

You power through Sylly Week

You’re excited for a new semester at UD. From becoming more independent again, to taking new classes, to of course the social life, everyone is ready to be back to campus and Newark.

The famous ‘Sylly Week’ is probably our favorite week of the semester. It entails everything from seeing our friends again, to going out, to the start of classes with barely any homework; it’s a pretty blissful week and a half or so. And with all the free time, Newark, which makes for the absolute best college town, is the place you want to be. There are so many things to do on and around campus.

The move in adjustment

The first thing you do when you get to Newark, whether it’s in a dorm or off campus, is adjust to being back. You say a hard goodbye to your parents and then almost immediately begin enjoying college life again. For those on campus, you have mixed feelings about eating dining hall food again, but  at least Caesar Rodney dining hall is halfway decent.

The Little Bob is mobbed

As a gym rat, I know the gym, or the ‘Little Bob,’ is crowded during the first week or so, but then it dies down. Everyone is either on an elliptical on the main  floor, or doing abs near the running track on the 3rd floor, while all of the guys are lifting on the strength floor in the basement. Maneuvering from machine to machine can be a pain, so maybe try something else out such as a fitness class, or an intramural sport.

Daging the day away

As previously mentioned, the famous UDages are back – in replacement for our lack of school spirit at football games and tailgating.

After the dage comes the party

Delaware was recently ranked #12 on the list of party schools in the nation. Frats are going to be throwing down quite often, and dages will be in full swing on the weekends. Enjoy yourself and the gross beer (most likely Natty), before they get bopped during the night by the Newark or University Police.

New classes can be fun

You’ll see the good looking student body walking in their summer attire on the green and on Main Street walking to classes. When classes actually start, there is not a lot of work during the first week of the semester in most majors. This relaxing start eases you into the semester before the exams start in a few weeks, and of course the dreaded finals week to end the semester.

The adventure of getting textbooks

Everyone always puts off ordering them, and then dreads actually picking them up at Liberman’s or Barnes and Nobles. The line is always out the door, and tons of freshman are wearing their new UD Class shirts and buying UD attire or lanyards. Then carrying them from Main Street to your dorm or apartment is a hassle in itself, since it’s so hot during the first few weeks.

The football game that your entire freshman floor goes to

…and probably not many other people. All of the freshman are decked out in their Blue and Yellow attire with Blue Hen or 1743 written on it for their very first (and sometimes last) football game. As football is the one aspect of college that Delaware lacks, so a lot of students end up leaving by halftime. Some still have fun and enjoy cheering on the team at the game.

It’s good to see the Green again

One of the prettiest parts of campus, everyone loves walking on the lovely brick paths between the gorgeous buildings and lush green grass. It’s how you know you’re back at UD.
