The UGA community reacts to the veto of the Campus Carry Bill

Students were tweeting using #vetoHB859

Yesterday, Georgia governor Nathan Deal vetoed House Bill 859, better known as the Campus Carry Bill. The bill would have legalized anyone to carry firearms on the campus of any public college in Georgia.

This piece of legislation had the potential to change student safety measures made by the university. President Jere Morehead has already publicly addressed that UGA would not support this legislation.

Former Student Government President Johnelle Simpson spoke against House Bill 859 at the first Campus Carry protest at The Arch.

This is a win for professors and students at UGA who have openly opposed this piece of legislation. The UGA community has organized two protests at The Arch, started texting petitions and sent letters to the governor himself asking him to veto the bill.

Many students have tweeted their feelings about the veto. There has been an outpouring of support for the governor’s recent veto, but not everyone agrees with his decision.
