Greek Life does more than just party
Work hard, play hard
When I mention I’m involved in Greek Life at UM, most people assume I’m only in it for the fun. Historically “The U” has been thought of as a party school: the palm trees, beach accessibility and weather all contribute to this idea.
Fraternities and sororities nationwide have also been affected by the stereotype anyone with a Greek affiliation is only there to rage.
I don’t blame them, we do live in paradise
Although my fraternity brothers and I do love to have fun, we also take pride in our charitable endeavors.
Each year, my fraternity Sigma Alpha Mu, hosts Sam Slam, a philanthropy event that raises money for Alzheimer’s disease. Last year, we raised nearly $5,000 for the cause.
Timothy Yassa had some input when asked where he thinks the opinion of Greek life stems from: “For years, fraternities and sororities have been filled with outgoing, fun-loving people.
“They have always been associated with drinking and parties, but never with social change. We are doing great things, and I hope people realize the benefits Greek Life can create.”

It would be unfair to disregard the fact that Delta Phi Epsilon – a sorority at UM – raised upwards of $80,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Research. Last year, they broke their national record for money raised.
Ally Padula, a junior in Sigma Delta Tau thinks, “everyone should get involved in Greek Life. It’s a really great opportunity to meet people, and give back.”

SDT’s philanthropy is centered around Wendy Walk, a charity started by one of their sisters who had a parent diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Liposarcoma.
SDT raised $44,000 this year. In addition to getting involved with philanthropies and charities, those involved in Greek Life often turn out to be leaders in other roles on campus.
Sure, those involved in Greek Life have more than their fair share of fun, but they also benefit our community, and national organizations. You can always find a squad of fraternity brothers and sorority sisters on campus at The Rat. It is the noticeable closeness that sets those involved in Greek Life apart from their peers.
There are many reasons why one may wish to join a fraternity or sorority. The first one that comes to mind may not be for philanthropic initiatives, but giving back promotes a sense of responsibility, and an even greater sense of pride.
Michael Lichtman, Prior of Sigma Alpha Mu at the University of Miami had this to say about Greek Life: “Getting involved in all this charity definitely brings those involved in Greek Life together. At the same time, it also creates a feeling of competition.
“It isn’t just an excuse to have fun, we pride ourselves on giving back to our community, and helping others.”
