We asked UM students how long they’d been in the library

Is it all night long or a few minutes?

The quintessential student is one who is able to balance their busy academic life with other aspects of his or her life. This would naturally come in the form of being able to diligently study for an assessment, while ensuring that one is not letting academics consume their time. While this balance is difficult, it is certainly not impossible to attain. In order to discover how University of Miami students have been able to balance their academic lives, we set out to the library to ask students how long they’ve been studying for upcoming finals.

Griffin, Freshman, Engineering

“Approximately zero minutes” Engineering student Griffin told us. Although having been in the library for quite some time already, hitting the books did not seem as easy as expected to Griffin. “I have a precalculus exam tomorrow and a writing exam later on in the week. I’ve studied for neither yet, but I feel pretty comfortable.” Griffin also revealed that re-watching the old Star Wars movies has unequivocally been a factor in not hitting the books quite yet.

Stephen, Freshman, Business

“A couple of hours”, said Stephen, who has also been studying for a precalculus exam in addition to a writing exam. However, Stephen had been at the library the last few days studying as well. He had only arrived at the library a few hours prior to being interviewed, but was studying fairly diligently since then. “I’ve put in more hours throughout the week too, but haven’t managed to get as much as I wanted in today.”

Modest.

Diego, freshman, Business

“All night man”, replied Diego, a Business student. Diego had just recently finished an all-nighter at the library cramming for an upcoming macroeconomics exam. In addition, he also has a writing exam the same day as his economics exam. “I don’t even know how I’m still awake to be honest with you”.
