What do you think about campus carry?

‘I don’t think guns have any place on a school campus’

During the 2015 legislative session, Texas passed a bill allowing concealed weapons on campus.

The campus carry law will take effect in August 2016.

Given how much of an uproar it’s causing on campus we went out to ask UT Austin students their opinion on the issue.

Eric, junior, Mechanical Engineering

“I’m not very solid on it, but it’s a pretty dumb idea that I think could lead to a lot of accidents… but if someone is going to shoot up a school it won’t be Texas.”

Andrea, senior, Public Relations

“I don’t think guns have any place on a school campus and I think our school should have the chance to opt out. I’d hate to see our school lose great professors because of this.”

Nick, freshman, Undergraduate Studies

“I think that guns will create more chaos. People will start slinging guns like the wild west. We should let the police handle it.”

Andrea, freshman, Journalism

“Campus carry is bad, it creates a hero complex for the people with guns to step up and save people. It feeds paranoia.”

Katie, freshman, Radio Television and Film

“I see both sides, she [Andrea] and I got into an argument about it and I’ve decided that I’m indifferent and tired of arguing about it.”

Devin, super senior, Public Health

“I was raised in Texas so I love guns and grew up shooting them. I believe it’s a solution, whether it’s the best one I don’t know. I do know that professors are worried about high strung students being armed.”

Donald, second year Law Student

“I think it’s ridiculous and shouldn’t happen.”

Annie, senior, Communications Studies

“I disagree with campus carry because I think schools are a safe place for students to disagree and I think by allowing guns on campus that will heavily deter open discussions.”

Morgan, sophomore, Government

“It won’t change anything. It’s the same as changing the speed limit, it won’t change how people behave.”

Brandon, sophomore, Radio Television and Film

“It’s way too easy to get guns but I don’t want to take them away from everyone.”

It seems the prospect of campus carry does not appeal to most students on campus and one thing is for certain: this issue is far from resolved.
