Why is Vandy changing women’s restrooms to ‘all gender’ and leaving men’s as is?

So are the lines just going to be longer for the old girls’ rooms or…?

Vandy, I love you, but WHAT THE FRUIT are you doing? In at least two different campus buildings, the women’s restroom has been changed to an “all gender restroom” while the analogous men’s restroom has remained male-only.

I could be blowing this way out of proportion considering I’ve only seen two changes so far, but it seems pretty odd.

This was a temporary sign up for a conference in Furman, but technically indicative of future plans. Are they just going to start taping these all over campus bathrooms?

The motion towards inclusivity by creating all gender restrooms is important – crucial even – in destroying the gender binary that defines people as only either a man or a woman.

But when we lump all genders into the female restroom and leave the male restroom alone, we’re saying “all genders are female except for males, and males are better so they get their own place to shit!”

Here is the only other restroom on this floor

The problem of the two gender bathroom dichotomy could be somewhat improved if we converted all single-stall bathrooms into all gender.

Anyone could then use whichever restroom they please and those who identify as men or women could use their respective, traditional, multiple stall bathrooms (note that I said “somewhat” improved – this obviously isn’t a perfect solution).

I am upset about this

But in Furman, the official new all gender restroom is taking the place of a multiple stall girls’ room, and the men’s room is staying the same.

Oh and also, in the SLC, a single stall women’s restroom has been changed to All Gender while the single stall men’s restroom has remained untouched.

Is this a joke? I don’t get it

This “restroom problem” isn’t going away anytime soon. But getting rid of women’s restrooms and leaving men’s merely lumps together – and fails to recognize – any gender other than male.

Hopefully we can all agree that gender is complex and can be confusing. All gender restrooms are important in recognizing that gender lies on a spectrum, and I don’t want to decry their increase on campus.

But this particular change needs explaining.
