Best places to nap on Vanderbilt campus
When you have a midterm in 12 hours and going back to your room is not an option
Just like shower shoes and Easy Mac, naps are one of the most important components of a college student’s life. And while there’s nothing better than curling up into your own bed to take one, sometimes that’s just not feasible.
Luckily, our campus is stacked with tons of underrated napping spots that do the job.
Can’t make it back to your room between classes? Or simply too lazy to make the trek to or from commons?
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Scales Lounge
Taking a nap in Lup lounge would be near impossible– too many people as distractions. Scales lounge, on the other hand, is a great alternative.
I’ll admit to nodding off on the couch there a few times because after a long day of classes, walking three flights of stairs to my bed is simply impossible.
Upstairs in Rand
I know Rand seems like the last place to get a nap in– so many people, all the time.
However, the third and top floor of Rand feels like a totally different building.
There’s a wonderful couch directly above the campus store that’s a great spot to take a snooze when you need to just be horizontal in Rand sans judgment.
Kissam by the fire place
And yet again Kissam kills it. The big comfy chairs located conveniently next to the indoor fireplaces make for the perfect fireside snooze.
And because its not in a central spot on campus its usually quiet so you can sleep soundly.
By the TVs in Commons center
Due to all the windows in Commons it’s definitely not where you’ll get the deepest sleep.
Nonetheless, the couches in front of the TVs are an excellent place to rest your eyes when in dire need of some midday rest.
Baseball lounge
Baseball’s claim to fame is its constant silence that makes it the ideal study spot. So, it’s a no brainer that it’s also the ideal napping spot in Rand.
The couch is tucked toward the back by the private rooms so you don’t need to worry about being on public display since people are always in baseball.
K.C. Potter Center
Did you know that the K.C. Potter center has super comfy couches in addition to free coffee and tea?
Plus when in there you’ll meet some of the friendliest people on campus.
Snacks, friendly faces, and a cozy napping spot– it’s a win-win.
Third floor Buttrick
Buttrick is by far one of the most beautiful buildings on campus. The high ceilings and contemporary facilities make it one of the best places to have class on campus. Especially compared others– cough, cough Calhoun.
Additionally, the third floor of Buttrick has a cushioned bench that is always free to lay down on. And the peaceful ambiance of Buttrick makes it easy to pass out.
Upstairs at the bookstore
This is a hidden gem of a study spot on campus but one of my favorite places. If you exit the bookstore upstairs by the textbook section, you’ll enter the 2525 office-building lobby where you’ll find cozy chairs to plop on.
Take it from me– you won’t run into anywhere so you can snooze at ease.
Rec center by Smoothie King
This seems antithetical– napping at the Rec? Yes, its true. There are tons of couches to choose from by the Smoothie King downstairs. So if you make the trek to the Rec but really don’t feel like exercising just opt for a nap instead!
The only nap you’ll ever regret is the one you don’t take.
Window seats in the SLC
The SLC is another relatively contemporarily designed building on campus despite being attached to dated scomb.
The window seats are not cushioned but I suggest simply bringing a pillow because this area is an excellent place to curl up and rest.
Featheringill
Unless you’re en engineer, you probably won’t find yourself in this building too often. But that’s a real shame because, like Buttrick, its one of the prettiest and most up to date.
The lobby has a vast selection of great napping couches. Definitely not the most convenient spot on campus, but sometimes a good, comfy couch is worth the distance.
