How you know you’re a Vandy student

You own a million black dresses

When I came to Vandy and saw girls going to football games in black dresses, I thought it was really odd. Why would you wear a dress to a game?

But I too became one of those black dress wearing girls, standing in the student section yelling at our football team to do better.

My closet quickly amassed so many black dresses and I can’t even tell you when or where I got them. Just know that I’m in one at every game.

You have everything monogrammed

Notebooks, planners, backpacks, Louis Vuitton purses. Literally everything on this campus has been monogrammed.

I’m not sure if it’s because you want to make sure people know something belongs to you, or if people just go monogram crazy. Either way, you will see someone’s initials on everything.

You know football season as tailgate season

Football games are fun but it’s more about the tailgate party at the frats before the game.

The probability of us actually winning the game is pretty low, so why not get drunk before hand so you can actually enjoy the game?

This way you have more hope in the team because you can’t really recall our record and you don’t really know what’s going on, you’re just enjoying yelling with everyone else.

Your laptop and water bottle are covered in stickers

Vandy students have a love affair with stickers and these stickers end up taking over your laptop and water bottles. They can be from different organizations you are involved in or just your general interests.

It ends up being a competition. The more stickers you have, the more involved you are. You obviously are doing great in life if you can’t even see the top of your laptop anymore because of all the stickers.

If the stickers have covered every inch of your laptop AND your water bottle you might as well graduate now and go on to be president, you are doing life correctly.

You are afraid of the squirrels

Vanderbilt squirrels are another breed of squirrel. They are crazy little things that are not afraid to sit next to you on a bench and nibble on a pizza.

Squirrels in other places usually run away when people walk up to them, but not Vandy squirrels. These little demons will make you move over on the sidewalk before they do.

Rumor has it that Vandy bought in two eagles to cut down on the squirrel population but, if that’s true, the squirrels seem to be outsmarting the eagles.

Big sweatshirts and running shorts are your go-to lazy day style…or everyday style

Who really has time to get dressed when we are busy finishing papers, cramming for tests, and planning events? No one!

At the beginning of the year everyone seems really well dressed, because we do not have a million things to focus on.

Towards the middle of the semester things start to get tough and looking cute is not our main focus. However it is really easy to throw on some running shorts and a hoodie and run out the door to get to that meeting you are already late to…again.

Qdoba is your go-to 3am dining place

You’ve just spent the night dancing and singing your life away, now you are starving. Unfortunately it’s 3am and the only money you have is $8 in meal money.

Don’t fret! Qdoba is here to save the day! They close at 5am on weekends, take the Commodore Card, and are super cheap. Perfect for stuffing your face with a burrito that’s bigger than your head.

You go to sporting events for the free stuff

During my two years at Vandy I have gone to so many sporting events.

I still do not understand a thing about any sport. However I have gained a huge collection of Vandy gear, all for FREE!

T-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, sweat pants, hats, and blankets….yes, blankets.

Just make sure you keep your eyes open for those emails and arrive to the events an hour before scheduled because those lines will be long.
