Don’t Fear! Housing Selection is Here!

Turn cramped quarters into a spacious oasis

Stress. Excitement. Fear. Tension. These are all common feelings around the anticipation of housing selection starting this week.

Soon it will be a mad dash of all students fighting to get into one place… the new dorms. All may try, but many will fail and be put into the dreaded Upper Quad dorms, Palmer, Piccolo, or even *gasp* Luter.

When I found out I would be living on the Upper Quad last year, being disappointed was an understatement. Up until our selection time, my roommate and I had checked the housing list of available rooms fanatically. We knew we would be right on the cusp of grabbing the last of the new dorms. Unfortunately, our fate would be sealed to living on the third floor of Taylor.

However, a year later, I have found a lot of perks to living on the Upper Quad.

Don’t get me wrong, our room is cramped, old, and we have to walk up a heck of a lot of stairs to get to it, but we make it work! And you can too with some basic organization tips.

One of the largest problems I found living in Taylor is the single closet. It was impossible for us two ladies to fit everything inside.

To combat the lack of closet space, my roommate lofted her bed and made the underneath her own personal closet. We put a rod through the bottom of the bedsprings and Wha-lah!

Another pain about living in Taylor are the window blinds that don’t block any of the light out. Come 7 AM and our room would be bright with sunlight, even with the blinds closed. To combat the sunlight we invested roughly $10 in black out blinds and let me tell you, best ten bucks I’ve ever spent.

To help make the most of the space we got A LOT of organizer bins. Let me reemphasis, A LOT of bins! A few on top of the fridge to hold snacks, a bin for makeup, closet organizing bins, and even some cool storage bins that double as extra seating.

Overall, living on the Upper Quad hasn’t been near as dreadful as I originally thought. With a little bit of organization and decorating you can turn any dorm room into a spacious oasis. Therefore, my fellow Deacs, go into housing selection without fear and may the odds be ever in your favor!
