Yale Professor Alicia Camacho arrested at White House

She was arrested during an immigration protest

Today, immigration-rights advocates gathered in front of the White House to bring to light the hardships of undocumented citizens.

Fourteen of them were arrested, including Stiles Associate Master and American Studies professor, Alicia Schmidt Camacho.

The action was intended to stop federal immigration raids and deportation of immigrants who face deadly gangs in their home countries.

As a part of the movement, the organizers planted 83 crosses to represent the 83 immigrant deaths in 2014 directly caused by deportation.

Alicia Schmidt Camacho said:

“As people of conscience, we have a responsibility to hold our government accountable for the needless loss of life and terror arising from misdirected deportation policies. The Central American refugees who have been denied protection are not strangers or lawbreakers — they are our parents, our sisters and brothers, our neighbors and friends; they build our communities as they work beside us, send their kids to school, and worship with us. If we deny their claims to refuge, we deny the most basic values of we the people…”
