No homework: Lecturers strike today
What the hell is a pig in a poke?
School’s out today as teaching staff at 69 unis begin an assessment boycott, affecting 1.2 million students.
• Some coursework will not be set
• Some lecturers will not turn up for classes
• Some universities will deduct teachers’ pay for today
Furious lecturers are refusing to mark coursework and exams because of an ongoing row over retirement schemes.
The University and College Union voted 87 per cent in favour of a marking boycott as greedy employers plan to cut pensions by thousands of pounds.
The strike means for many students there will be no coursework and in some cases, no lectures after unis threatened to dock strikers’ pay.
General Sec Sally Hunt said: “We are being asked to buy a pig in a poke and that is simply not acceptable.
“We hope the employers will come back to the table for genuine negotiations aimed at resolved the enormous gap between our two positions.”
