These are the subjects most likely to formally complain about their university
It’s the Karen league
The ranking of subjects most likely to complain about their uni has been revealed, as the number of students formally complaining hits a record high.
Business students made the most complaints in 2019, according to an annual report by the university watchdog.
Complaints rose by a fifth in 2019, says the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA).
Business tops the table partly by virtue of being one of the most popular courses in the country. It’s way out in front of subjects allied to medicine, with over 150 more complaints.
Whilst the rise in complaints has been dramatic, say the OIA, it could be a good thing. The report attributes the upsurge to students being more aware of their ability to complain, industrial action, and increased media focus on student complaints.
Overall, almost half of complaints were about academic issues, with only 50 of the total 2,371 complaints made to the OIA relating to the 2018 strikes.
“The rise in complaints is not necessarily a bad thing,” says the report. “It is important that students are able and confident to raise their concerns and pursue them. Providers can benefit from hearing about students’ concerns and getting a better understanding of their students’ experiences, and we can use the learning from complaints to promote good practice in the sector.”
