In 2010 Vernon was exposed for sending sexual text messages to glamour model Rhian Sugden. He messaged her every day for four months after meeting her at a Bolton nightclub.

At the time, Vernon was a very popular radio and television personality, and he took to the radio to make a public apology to Tess live on air.

A source told The Sun that the 2010 scandal was nothing more than texts: “The daft thing is they never even so much as kissed six years ago. It was just flirty, sex chat and a few nights out together. But there’s obviously chemistry between them and once they start texting each other, they can’t seem to stop.”

Rhian Sugden, the lady he had been messaging behind Tess’ back, said on a Channel 4 documentary that she wished she’d never met him: “He just got away with it. It ruined everything for me. I felt like I was going up and up with my career and then that came along. I wish I’d never met him.

“He got to give an apology on the radio and just got to carry on, with Family Fortunes, ironically. It still makes me feel sick.”

He reportedly started messaging her again in 2016, saying that he wanted “closure” and that Tess knew all about this second potential scandal. Messages to Rhian included:

“A very private location is required for some wine.”
“That’s cool. You’d better get a wig.”
“Lol. I’m serious.”
“No way in public. Who has an apartment?”

Vernon responded to the latest story, claiming that he could recognise how the messages looked but they were pulled out of context: “There was never any inappropriate intent to our communication, I was merely trying to find answers to questions that I’ve had since 2010.

“Tess is aware of everything that has been discussed with Rhian.”
