Iggy Azalea responds after people accuse her of blackfishing in her new music video

‘I’m the same colour as I always am, just in a dimly lit room with red lights’

Iggy Azalea has responded to accusations she was blackfishing in her new music video, saying, “I’m the same colour as I always am.”

Iggy’s only the most recent person to be called out for blackfishing, with celebrities such as the Kardashians, Ariana Grande and Rita Ora all having been accused in the past of changing their appearances to look ethnically black.

After Iggy’s I Am The Stripclub music video dropped (side note-who knew Iggy was still making music?), social media users took to Twitter to call out the rapper’s appearance, accusing her of blackfishing and appropriating black culture.

Iggy, is that you?

Some users accused Iggy of blackface, another said the video was “a lot to unpack,” and many were left asking, “Who dat? Who dat?,” when faced with a side by side comparison of Iggy in her Fancy music video from 2014.

In response to a fan asking her to clear up the accusations, Iggy tweeted that she didn’t care. “I’m the same colour as I always am, just in a dimly lit room with red lights,” she wrote. “It’s the same makeup from every other part of the video just with a smokey eye and different wig. Just ignore them, who cares? Let em talk.”

Iggy added: “I’m the same colour as the other white dancer in the room and not anywhere close to the colour of the black dancers.

“People will say ANYthing to try and cancel me and it’s actually kinda funny to watch people so worked up over a black wig and smokey eye.”

Even her makeup artist got involved in the drama, dropping the names of the products he used on Iggy on set (Armani luminous silk foundation shade six and Nars caramel concealer- if you’re interested).

While her response was satisfactory to some, others argued that Iggy should listen to the black community instead of shutting down their criticism.

This recent criticism hasn’t hurt her viewing numbers as I Am The Stripclub had over 2.9 million views in just three days. On Sunday, the rapper tweeted her thanks for the support she’d received.

“To everyone showing me love: Thankyou for dedicating your day to me & helping me promote, I love you!” She said. “To everyone showing me hate: Thankyou for dedicating your day to me & helping me promote, I love you!”
