What is beaning and why is it all over my TikTok right now?
2021: Police are telling shopkeepers to stop selling beans to kids
Everyone knows that beans are good for the heart, but now a new purpose has been discovered for our tiny, tomato sauce-covered friends. I am of course talking about beaning: the latest TikTok trend spilling all over our FYPs.
Beaning is the act of throwing a full can of beans on someone’s doorstep with a view to moderately inconveniencing them, or as an act of fully-fledged REVENGE.
Big beaning hotspots are cropping up all over the country, and are usually found in student areas.
In Newcastle, @beanbaditsncl encourage TikTok users to send them addresses on the promise that they will go and chuck beans on the doorsteps of those properties.
This video, which has been watched over 220k times, shows a gloved assassin performing a double beaning on an unwitting Jesmond resident.

The chaplain at the University of Kent, Sheila McLachlan, has also fallen victim to the bean bandits. Luckily, she’s managed to see the positive side.
“Out of this has come a real rallying around of the local neighbourhood and the community,” Sheila told The Sun. “It’s been really nice to see how folks have volunteered to help clean up, popped round, mailed and messaged – so it’s been good and bad news.”
In Liverpool, this student posted on Facebook about her now-tarnished doorstep.
The beaning crisis has got go so bad in Leeds that West Yorkshire Police are now calling on shopkeepers to be wary with who they allow to purchase the beloved breakfast item.
In a statement, PCSO Michelle Owens said: “If you work in a shop, please can you be aware of youths buying large quantities of cans of beans, if you have children living at home, please be mindful if you see them removing cans of beans from the family home.”
But where does the trend actually come from?
The first recorded beaning took place in April when a TikTok account called @bean.bandits launched an assault on someone’s front door.

The video was captioned: “We beaned someones front door” and since then, the trend has really taken off.
If you’ve been beaned, or if you go out beaning yourself, I’d love to hear from you at [email protected].
