Surprise! New Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi is… a multi-millionaire
This is really great in a cost of living crisis for the worst off x
Yesterday was a pretty rubbish day to be Boris Johnson, with Sajid Javid resigning as Health Secretary and Chancellor Rishi Sunak similarly resigning not even 10 minutes later. There’s been a tidal wave of similar resignations last night and this morning, and it’s all just a bit of a mess really.
But one man who’s cashed in on it all is Nadhim Zahawi, who yesterday was promoted from Education Secretary to Chancellor. And shock – he’s pretty bloody minted.
According to the Mirror, Nadhim Zahawi has an estimated net worth of up to £100m. His wife and their companies reportedly have a huge property portfolio, including a £20m London townhouse, an industrial estate and a country house with stables.
When he became a minister he quit as a director of their firm, and transferred his 50 per cent shares to his wife.
Labour MP Zarah Sultana said: “So just like with Rishi Sunak, we again have a super-rich Chancellor who will be on the side of the super-rich.”
Rishi Sunak, the previous Chancellor who resigned last night, is also mega-rich. Earlier this year Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, appeared in the Sunday Times rich list, and he is believed to be the richest man in the house of commons.
The Sunday Times rich list valued their worth at an eye-watering £730m. Before politics Sunak worked as a banker, and his wife is the daughter of one of India’s most successful entrepreneurs.
The super-rich once again running the country’s purse strings? This is all boding really well in the midst of a cost of living crisis for the worst off.
