10 years on from Educating Yorkshire, where is Musharaf ‘Mushy’ Asghar now?

10 years ago, kids all over the UK fell in love with Mushy Asghar and his AMAZING storyline in Educating Yorkshire. The student made headlines for overcoming his stammer before his last exam, with a little help from his Kings Speech-loving teacher, Mr. Burton.

It’s hard to believe this happened a decade ago – and every iconic year 11 from the series (Hadiqa, Safiyyah, Bailey with the eyebrows) will have long finished uni by now.

But all these years on, just what is Mushy – arguably the most memorable student – up to now?

After leaving Thornhill, Mushy went on to study Applied Science at college, before starting a BA in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Huddersfield.

Since leaving school in 2013, he’s been making money as a motivational speaker, eventually being able to turn a side-hustle into a full-time career. As well as having 12,000 followers on YouTube, Mushy has made appearances on BBC Breakfast and Steph’s Packed Lunch.

In 2016, he appeared with Mr. Burton on First Dates. He got on well with his date, but in 2021 he revealed that the pair were no longer seeing each other.

Mushy has almost 64k followers on Twitter, and often shares his career achievements and day-to-day life. He spoke about the 10-year anniversary of Educating Yorkshire with his followers, who were really pleased to see him thriving.

“Still remember how much you moved me on that show. Keep up with the good work,” one person said.

“Great to see you back, lots of love out there for you” said another.
