Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party after 45 days
A leadership election will take place within the next week
It has been confirmed Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom following her 45 days in office.
This comes after her time in power has seen the crash in markets, the resignation of two key ministers and the lack of confidence from her party.
In a statement outside Number 10, Liz Truss confirmed she has resigned and said: “I recognise given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”
The prime minister confirmed there will be a leadership election within the next week and she will remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen. Truss said she has spoken with King Charles III to notify him that she is resigning as the leader of the Conservative party.
Updates as they come.
