Aberystwyth one of the most gay-friendly universities

Finally, we get some great feedback

| UPDATED

Aberystwyth has been hailed for being one of the UK’s most gay-friendly universities.

The University is in the top 20 out of 158 universities, scoring an impressive nine out of 10 in the Stonewall University Guide.

The guide, which measures how much support is offered to lesbian, gay and bisexual students, praised Aber for its welcoming community and staff training.

The ranking is a welcome one for Aber

Thomas Fitzgibbon, a final year student, said: “I think Aber lives up to its reputation as the Welsh Brighton.

“You feel safe and confident enough to be who you are in this town without fear of discrimination.

“Students openly talk about their sexuality and are comfortable within the community.”

Clubs and pubs are welcoming to the gay community, but there are no strict gay-only venues – you’ll have to drive two hours to find any of these.

Cardiff University was in the top six, scoring a perfect 10 out of 10.

Ruth Hunt, Chief Executive of Gay By Degree, said: “There are a record number of university places available this year and prospective students who are lesbian, gay or bisexual will want to study where they will be supported and developed.

“It’s particularly concerning that only 35 universities are monitoring student’s sexual orientation leaving them no way of telling if they’re providing a positive experience for gay students.

“We hope that this year’s guide prompts universities to do more to make campuses a welcoming place for all students.”
