Businessman Thomas J Moran is QUB’s new Vice Chancellor

And he’s a yank

Queen’s has appointed New Yorker Thomas J Moran, an Irish-American businessman and philanthropist, as the new Vice Chancellor of the university.

Moran has roots in Fermanagh, Tipperary and  Cavan. As president and CEO of the Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, has been listed as one of the top 100 Irish-American business people in the USA.

Impressive.

He also serves on the boards of directors of the Greater New York Council of the Boy Scouts of America and has a degree in maths from Manhattan College. He’s so darn wholesome.

This appointment came about the day after Queen’s revealed it was cutting more than 1000 undergraduate places over the coming years due to the £8m DEL cuts in government funding.

Former Vice Chancellor, Patrick Johnston said of the cuts: “The potential negative impact, not just on the university but on the local economy is very significant.

“If we’re not competitive we will not attract the best students, and we will not attract the best staff.”

Ulster University has also been hit by the cuts and will cut 53 courses.
