QUB Societies are petitioning support for the MSF hospital bombing

Today QUB Amnesty International and QUB Friends of Medecins Sans Frontieres teamed up to raise awareness about the bombing of an MSF hospital.

The October 3rd bombing left 30 dead in the Kunduz hospital despite it being a protected site.

While NATO is organising their own investigation, the QUB societies have started a petition in the hopes of instigating an independent investigation.

So far they’ve gained over 200 signatures and will continue petitioning next week.

Luke Boyle, an English third year and events and fundraising commissioner for QUB Amnesty International said: “It’s for the bombing of the MSF hospital in northern Afghanistan that’s now left several hundred thousand without medical care. It’s a protected site but was bombed regardless.

“Our hope is to do the petition so that it will be sent to the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission. It’s nothing to do with politics or ideology – it’s the fact that it’s a protected site.

“We’re standing up for people’s rights. We’re having an event on the 18th at the Bar With No Name to help raise awareness which is £3 entry at the door”

An International Politics and Conflict Studies fresher and member of QUB Friends of MSF, Declan McDevitt said: “As a human being I think it’s an issue of justice and truth. If we do pursue an independent investigation it will set a precedence in the future.

“So we hope this helps not only the people directly effected by this bombing but also people in similar circumstances in the future.”

Their event will take place from 8pm on November 18th at The Bar With No Name and will include live music from Anna Duncan, the Fugues, Lonesome George and EQ1NIX as well as a DJ set with GoGIRL.”
