QUB Oxjam event raises nearly £500 for Syrian refugees

And they got to wear Christmas jumpers

This year the QUB Oxfam Society deviated from their traditional Spooky Halloween night for Oxjam and instead decided to opt for a Christmas party – jumpers and all. The event took place on Wednesday in Bar Sub and saw an impressive line up featuring top Irish band Runaway Go and VOKXEN.

Conor Scott, best known for featuring on The Voice UK in 2013, also made an appearance, alongside local bands Back to the Left, Hydrophonex, and The Aos Sí.

Alongside the live music, the event allowed attendees to peruse the Oxfam shop’s vinyl collections, which featured hidden gems such as the Die Hard soundtrack (something everyone needs but no one thinks to buy).

Face paint was an added bonus

The night itself was success as the total raised was just short of £500. This money will go entirely towards Oxfam’s work in the Middle East – helping Syria’s neighbouring countries cope with the influx of refugees, alongside providing aid for the people remaining within their homeland, currently threatened by internal and external terror.

James Downey, Music Technology third year and member of The Aos Sí said: “Oxjam provided such a fun, entertaining atmosphere for us to play our first gig.

“We’re just happy to we could share our music for such a positive form of fundraiser.”

Colin Rice, English third year and Oxfam Society member said: “The turnout was great, everyone was festive looking and they all seemed to have a good time so that’s all that matters.

“And all the money we raised was for a good cause so win, win.”
