Poppy Reelected after dismal turnout
Poppy Wilkinson comes out victorious in elections that see less than 20% of students vote.
Poppy said she was “extremely proud” to be reelected on International Women’s Day in her victory speech, after securing 2447 votes to Edward Sainsbury’s 1786. In Poppy’s manifesto, she highlights a reform of Guild politics as a central aim, following a year of increased apathy from the student population.
This has all the more relevance now, as just 5357 students voted, despite free cake and popcorn for those who voted.
When questioned about student engagement, current Vice President of Democracy and Resources Tom Wragg was quoted as saying “if you felt let down by us, then fair enough”.
As expected, candidates affiliated to the disgraced student activist group Defend Education struggled, with Helena Dunnett-Orridge and Deborah Hermans defeated early on in their campaigns for Vice President of Welfare and Vice President of Education respectively. However, Rachel O’Brien took to the stage, complete with red square, duly elected as Community Action Officer after running unopposed.
Ben ‘Pirate’ Puusta may be feeling less than ship shape after being ejected in the early rounds of the presidential election, along with Maximilian A. Shapiro who failed to make an impression with his ‘no gimmicks’ campaign.
Beth ‘Lovey’ Dovey secured her position as Vice President of Democracy and Resources, sending her commiserations to RON (Re Open Nominations) after she ran unopposed. In her first speech as VPDR elect, Beth promised to make her position “very, very sexy”.
