Birmingham student hospitalised in second car collision of the week

Two students were hit by cars while crossing the busy Bristol Road last week

A student was run over last Monday night, followed by another serious collision on Thursday.

  • First year chemical engineering student mowed down crossing busy high street
  • Second incident in the space of seven days
  • Both happened on the same short stretch of the Bristol Road

A first year Chemical Engineering student got mowed down outside the Seoul Plaza on Bristol Road on Thursday night.

The incident is the second student-related accident to have occurred down Selly’s busy high street in just seven days, after another student was hit near The Goose the previous Monday.

According to witnesses, the collision was serious and at least two ambulances and three police cars were rushed to the scene.

Police and ambulances were on hand quickly

According to a second year Chemical Engineer who saw the incident, the male student in question was rushed to hospital, although he has now been discharged and luckily has no major injuries.

Speaking to The Tab, she said: “I was with the Chemical Engineering group going out at the time and saw the entire thing.

“It happened very fast and I remember feeling in a state of shock- it was pretty scary.

“I’ve been told that he has now been discharged form hospital with no serious injuries. I’m just glad that he’s okay, he’s lucky not to be badly injured.”

The incident bares an all too similar resemblance to an incident that took place just a week before, when another student was hit outside The Goose on Friday 3 October.

A bouncer who was working at the Soak on the night observed the car crash.

He informed The Tab that a taxi dropping people off at the Goose was partly responsible for the collision.

“The taxi parked up outside the pub, but was blocking the view of the road for other drivers.

“A car pulled out to the right of the taxi, but failed to see the student who was crossing in front of it. The vehicle collided with the student, causing them to be thrown to the floor.

“Thankfully the ambulance and police arrive very quickly and blocked the road off.”

A second year International Relations and Economics student, Edem Cleland-Awity, was in the pub when the incident happened.

He said: “The police came inside [the pub] asking for a bucket of water to clear away the guy’s blood. The ambulance put him in a neck brace and stretchered him into the ambulance”.

With the two road accidents having occurred so close together, second year French and English Literature student Kate Spree says students need to be far more careful.

“I’m not surprised someone got hit. Students really need to be more careful crossing that road, especially when they’re drunk.

“Cars race down the main road far too quickly, and unless something is done to stop that, I wouldn’t be surprised if something really awful happens in the near future.

“It’s the responsibility of both students and drivers to address the problem.”

The West Midlands Police were unable to comment on either incident, however a spokesperson advised that all students take extra care when crossing the road, especially in the busiest areas.
