Fresher mowed down in ‘horrific’ car collision on the way to Sports Night

Students were left traumatised by the sight of a “motionless” body lying next to the vehicle

A first year was rushed to A&E last night after being hit by a car crossing the Bristol Road.

The incident occurred at 11.45pm when students were heading en masse to Sports Night at the Guild.

The 18-year old, who is yet to be identified, was struck after he stumbled in front of a black car near the traffic lights at the Bournbrook crossing.

The collision is now the third in as many weeks, following two similar student-related accidents in Selly Oak earlier this month.

Where the accident took place

Having witnessed the incident, second year student Lottie said the accident looked “horrific”.

She said: “I was walking to the Guild where I saw flashing lights and sirens sounding from an ambulance and a police car.

“There was a girl who had fallen into the road sobbing, and as I got closer I saw a large group of people huddled over someone who was lying motionless in front of a car.

“The drivers appeared to be a middle aged man and woman, who were stood to the side- both looked extremely distressed.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t find out  exactly what happened because I was ushered along by the police at the scene.

“I was just shocked at seeing so many people visibly traumatised, and no one seemed to know what was going on.

“It was really scary.”

The scenes at a similar incident two weeks ago

In a statement given to The Tab, a spokesman for the West Midlands Police said: “Police were called to a serious road traffic collision on the Bristol Road shortly before midnight last night (Wednesday), and a 18-year-old man was taken to hospital.

“The road was closed until 1.30am this morning and the investigation is still continuing.”

The current condition of the student is unknown.
