There’s more to campus than Old Joe

Affectionately known as Old Joe, the Joseph Chamberlain memorial clock tower, is the heart of the University of Birmingham. The most Instagram worthy centre piece of our university.

Yet, there are so many other places that people don't know about. We decided to explore campus and see what hidden treats UoB has to offer. Bet you didn't know we have our very own dinosaur?

The Lapworth Museum of Geology, which dates back to 1880, is one of the oldest geological museums in the UK. After a very pricey makeover, it’s ready for a visit. Named after Charles Lapworth, the first Professor of Geology at Mason College, it holds a huge amount of archival research as well as fossils and minerals. There are fossilised fish, dragonflies, crabs, lobsters and pterosaurs from the Solnholfen Limestone in Germany, as well as collections from Brazil, Italy, Lebanon and the USA. There's even animals that are up to 510 million years old!

Birmingham definitely has that flower power

Winterbourne Botanical Gardens is a couple of minutes away from our fabulous Guild of Students. Entry is free for all students of the University of Birmingham. It has a tearoom- perfect to take the parents when they visit. This seven-acre paradise holds over 6000 plant species. It is the perfect place to escape the business of student life.
