Edinburgh named ‘friendliest’ city in Scotland

Here in Edinburgh we get a bit of slack for not being as friendly and approachable as our western rival, Glasgow. However, according to a study carried out by the Co-op across the UK, Edinburgh has emerged as ‘Top of the Scots’ when it comes to neighbourly support.

The study named Sheffield as the most ‘neighbourly city’, with Edinburgh in fourth place after Norwich and Nottingham, but top of the table in Scotland.

The survey did however highlight some bleak statistics across the UK, with one in four people over the age of 45 revealing that they do not have a neighbour they can call on for help.

In fact, most said that the main reason they would call on the person living next door would be to collect or drop off a parcel – hardly a bonding activity.

While Edinburgh did better than many places in the survey, it’s not hard to recognise that this is just as prevalent an issue here as anywhere else in our digital society.

Rufus Olins, a spokesperson for the Co-op said: “This research shows we have much to do to improve our neighbourly spirit and foster that sense of community.”

So come on Edinburgh, go speak to your neighbours. That noise complaint could be the start of something beautiful. Take inspiration from Outkast and demand some sugar.

Let’s get to know our neighbours, make it to the top of the league of approachability and look back in disbelief on the days when Glasgow came anywhere near to touching us.
