299 Edinburgh University staff earned £100k or more last year

299 Edinburgh University senior staff earned £100,000 or more last year, revealed Edinburgh University’s Annual Report and Accounts.

The highest earner on the list is Vice-Chancellor Peter Mathieson who earned £392,053.

In last year’s report, 285 staff earned 100k or more, which makes this year’s numbers an increase of 14 staff members.

43 per cent of these senior post holders are clinical academics, or medically trained, including Peter Mathieson.

A graphic shows that the majority of these earners were in the range from £100,000 to £109,000 with 58 of the 299 being in this bracket.

Seven members of senior staff made above £250,000.

Mathieson took a 20 per cent pay cut, and senior staff at Edinburgh took a 10 per cent pay cut at the start of the pandemic. These cuts lasted for six months.

Just a year and a half ago, Scotland’s education minister Richard Lochhead said university principals shouldn’t earn pay raises above inflation.

He also urged university senior staff to exercise restraint and ensure that staff were receiving the same increases in pay.
