Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt students react to the UCU strikes
“Fuck that. Selfish bastards.”
Yesterday it was announced that lecturers and other teaching staff at Edinburgh Uni and Heriott-Watt would be taking part in UCU strikes from 1 December to 3 December.
The teaching staff participating in the strikes won’t hold their usual classes and lectures on those days.
This industrial action is taking place in 58 UK universities, and is over issues with staff pension cuts, and pay and working conditions.
We asked you over on our Instagram how you felt about the strike announcement, and here’s what you had to say:
‘Not again’
‘A bit shit for students but it’s uni’s fault for their treatment of lecturers. No anger at them tbh’
‘So incredibly cruel. Let students have one year of normality’
‘When university staff are overworked and underpaid, students suffer too’
‘Their pensions have been cut and they’re doing something about it. I think that’s a good thing’
‘After all of last year being so awful? Starting to think we need to protest some other way’
‘Here we go again’
‘Classic’
‘Kind of annoyed they’re doing it the week of exam revision for tutorials’
‘It’s not the lecturers’ fault, the uni should support their staff, and students should support them too’
‘This is awful news’
‘First year – strikes, second year – new strikes, third year – Covid, and now fourth year – back to strikes. Smh Heriot-Watt’
‘Right before exams? Brilliant timing, cheers guys’
‘Honestly fair enough – uni staff are overworked and underpaid’
‘Fuck that. Selfish bastards’
