23 months after the last Crush, EUSA is relaunching its LGBTQ+ club night

Nearly two years after the last Crush, EUSA has announced it’s relaunching its LGBTQ+ club night.

Billed as Crush’s “alter ego”, the first Klub Kweer night is being held in Teviot Underground on Friday 25th from 8pm.

Entry is completely free and the night will see live drag performances, a costume competition (with prizes), and sets from queer DJs.

Mystika Glamoor, Klub Kweer’s host and all-round big name on the Edi drag scene, told The Edinburgh Tab they thought: “Live events are so important for queer people to escape, and in doing so, find themselves”.

Doors open at 8pm – with the bar not opening until 9pm to allow for a sober space for an hour. This a particular passion of Mystika Glamoor, whose day job is running Kafe Kweer (formerly known as The Greenwood) which is an LGBTQ+ café between Brunstfield and Fountainbridge that aims to provide a safe and inclusive sober space for all.

After 9pm, the bar will open and there will be live performances from local Scottish drag acts including Krystal Klear and Doriant Fisk. DJs Roché Rabbit and Zak from Bolton will also be playing sets into the night.

There will also be a costume competition – with prizes – in three categories: drag king, drag queen, and gender rebel.

Mystika told The Edinburgh Tab that she is thrilled to showcase Edinburgh’s local drag. They said: “Drag as an art-form is an incredible blend of pure entertainment, incredible creativity, and political poetry. As it becomes ever more popular through tv, I’m thrilled to have a platform to promote and celebrate the best of local drag talent! ”

The relaunch has been billed to coincide with LGBT+ History Month and organisers are keen to give EUSA’s old LGBTQ+ club night Crush a “fresh start”.

Although there is no fixed schedule for the next Klub Kweer event, if this event proves successful it is hoped it will make a more regular return.

Those behind the event also hope the new club night will give them the flexibility to “mix it up a bit” – and offer a range of different target audiences, vibes, and focusses for future events.

The delay in a return of an LGBTQ+ student night  – especially compared to Big Cheese – has been blamed on continued uncertainty and restrictions related to Covid-19. Organisers told The Edinburgh Tab that to get the venue they wanted, at a sufficient capacity, and to have it with free entry meant waiting until the situation was improved.

Klub Kweer has been organised by EUSA with considerable input from LGBTQ+ Liberation Officer, George Ross, and Trans and Non-Binary Liberation Officer, Jaime Prada.

They told us they were delighted to be “finally bringing back our queer party, and what better time than LGBT+ History Month! In a period of reflection and activism, hosting Klub Kweer also let us celebrate our beautiful community.”

They added: “Now that we can organise these kind of events, we are going to be more ambitious than ever before. We plan to use this space to try different formats and themes for our queer night club, so keep an eye out to what’s to come!”
