Students and young people in Edinburgh spend over £200 a month on takeaways, new research has found. We’re doing Ting Thai proud.

A study by retailer SPAR has revealed how much 16-24 year olds in different cities spend on takeaways, and found that young people in Edi are spending £207 per month on delivery.

This would add up to almost £2,500 a year – almost half the minimum UK government maintenance loan. Yikes.

However, 40 per cent of young people say they will be cutting back on takeaways this winter to save money, and almost a quarter have already started spending less due to the cost of living crisis.

Edinburgh University now has some of its own measures in place to help students through the cost of living crisis. It has just introduced a “cheaper lunch option” across its campuses, in an effort to counter the impact of rising costs on students, where students can get a bowl of soup and a roll for just £1.50 for lunch.

SPAR found that young people in London are spending the most, with £226 a month spent. Then was Leeds young people with a £217 monthly spend, and Edinburgh came in third place. Students are spending the least in Newcastle, at just £100 a month on takeaways and deliveries.
