Man arrested over Majestyk fire

32-year-old in custody after blaze at former nightclub

An arrest has been made in relation to last night’s fire at the Majestyk building in Leeds.

A 32-year-old is in custody after being seen acting suspiciously in the area.

The roof of the grade II-listed building was completely burnt by the blaze, which firefighters tackled throughout last night.

Detective Inspector Ian Lawrence, of Leeds District CID, said: “We are working closely with fire service investigators to establish the cause of the fire and that process is at a very early stage.

“It is too early to say whether the cause of the fire has been suspicious. The fire has caused significant damage to the building leaving the roof unsafe, which means it is likely to take some time before the scene can be fully examined.

“A 32-year-old man was arrested last night after witnesses reported seeing a man acting suspiciously in the area. He remains in custody at this time.

“The fire was reported at about 7.20pm last night and I would appeal for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area in the time leading up to it to contact us.”
