Petition started to save Old Bar from renovations

It’s going to become another Terrace

A petition was started yesterday by the Leeds Uni Music Society to save Old Bar from the Union’s proposed renovations.

The petition is rapidly gaining support, receiving over 1,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

The Union explained the changes to old bar in a picture on their Facebook Page: “Old Bar is about to look a bit newer – while keeping its worldly charms of course.”

The proposed changes from the Union’s Facebook Page

The graphic has received mostly negative comments, with Facebook’s new emoji feature coming in useful. The post recrived 31 angry emojis and 30 sad emojis compared to a measly one like.

One of the sticking points for the petition to stop the changes was that some of the tables were to be replaced with chessboard tables, as seen in the design.

The petition reads: “There is a lot of love for Old Bar in its current form, it’s something different as there aren’t many proper pubs outside of the city centre

“It’s a nice comfortable place to sit, drink, eat and work to name a few. This atmosphere must be preserved if life on campus is to continue.

“Old Bar is perfect as it is, as can be seen from the fact it’s constantly packed, you can’t improve on perfection so don’t even try #saveoldbar.”

The petition is accompanied by a letter to the Union which said: “We don’t need another Terrace, keep old bar the way it is. Except the toilets, you can change those.”
