We asked students how safe they feel in Leeds
Let’s be honest, it’s not the best place for safety
Leeds is one of the darkest cities in the UK, you only have to walk through Hyde Park to notice this. With not even one street light, Woodhouse Moor (Hyde Park) is unsafe to walk through- even at 4pm. So, if you want to stay alive, do not walk around Leeds in the dark.
Michael Mahon, Second Year, Public Relations
"Hmm, I feel fairly safe. During the day I'm fine. But, at night I do feel a little uneasy. I don't go to certain night clubs because they are dodgy or druggy. People in Leeds can be confrontational, starting arguments over tiny issues. So, I don't tend to drink much on a night out because I don't want anything to happen."
Anna Yonish, Third Year, Theatre and Performance
"It depends on the time of day. When it gets dark, even now at 4pm. I hope that people won't be committing crimes. I am wary of people."
Tanny Ogundele, Third Year, Computing
"I think that it needs drastic improvements for example, there was a petition in first year for lights in Beckett Park which I signed myself. Yet, it appears that the council haven't taken any appropriate action."
Beth Welsh, Second Year, English with Creative Writing and Emma Tarabay, Second Year, Public Relations with
Beth: "Overall, I do genuinely feel safe. I think its because Leeds is bombarded with students. So, everywhere you go, there is always someone there. Although, I do not feel safe in Hyde Park. Walking in the pitch black isn't the best thing and I have to use the torch on my phone to be able to see. Knowing there have been attacks in the area makes me literally run through Hyde Park to get home quicker. That shouldn't be the case and I should be able to walk in my student town knowing that I can get from A to B without any issues."
Emma: "I don't feel safe enough to walk alone after 5, now that it gets dark early. I think that all student concerns that revolve around safety are ignored by anyone who has the power to do anything about it."
Rob Wood, Second Year, Business Management with Finance
"I think it's safe. But, it can be scary at night in Hyde Park as there are no lights."
Sal Wilcox, Second Year, Journalism
"As a whole, I feel really safe in Leeds. It's very student orientated and the public transport is pretty good, so it is easy to get home safely and quickly."
