UCL may be the 4th best university in the world but its students don’t feel anywhere near the same way about their union, which came 67th in the National Student Survey of the best and worst student unions in the UK.

The ranking, based on the opinions of UCL students, sees UCLU sitting well below Imperial  (32nd), Queen Mary (40th) and, most worryingly’ King’s. The Strand Poly union was ranked  as the 26th best in Britain, a whopping forty one places above UCLU.

The ranking also leaves UCLU right in the middle of the table of the best and worst unions, which was topped by the University of Sheffield SU. The Gordon Street Union does however have the distinction of being ranked higher than the Oxford Student’s Union, which was ranked as the second worst union in the country in 123rd place.

Only 64% of UCL students surveyed said that they were happy with UCLU, comparing with  95% at first placed Sheffield and 73% at King’s. That was despite 85% of UCL students saying that they were satisfied with their university experience, 3% more than said they were satisfied with the Strand Poly.

The Tab contacted UCLU for a comment on the issue but has yet to receive a response. With the survey based on student satisfaction for the last academic year, this year’s union team will be keen to ensure that improvements are made which can lead to a higher ranking next year.

The UCLU score is however in line with the national average, which saw 66% of student’s express satisfaction with their union compared to 85% satisfaction with their university experience. Universities with lower student satisfaction have on the whole greater union satisfaction, with UCL’s high score in the former a more positive outcome of the survey.

Oxford students meanwhile may have hoped that after falling to 5th in the world below UCL that they might at least have had a top class union. Unfortunately for them it’s not looking that way.
