Tory Soc play host to the former Defence Secretary Liam Fox

Next Tuedsay will see controversial Tory MP Dr Liam Fox stroll through the gates of Gower Street. The former Defence Secretary and MP for North Somerset, will be hosted by the UCL Conservatives Society in a speech and Q & A session.

Fox was the centre of scandal in mid 2011 when he resigned as Defence Secretary over controversy surrounding his working relationship with Adam Werritty, a close friend who was an unofficial adviser to Fox. Werrity was accused of pretending to represent the British government abroad.

Before becoming an MP Fox was a GP and a Civilian Army Medical Officer. In his student days hew was president of the Glasgow University Conservative Association.

During his uni days he resigned from a role on the university’s Students Representative Council in protest over a motion passed by the council, which criticised a decision by the student’s union to prohibit gay students joining. He has since stated that his views have changed since his student days.

Tory Soc President, Mathew Corner told The Tab,  “Liam Fox has been at the top of British Politics and Conersvative party for the last ten years, served in cabinet positions and ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party”

“I’m delighted to welcome him to UCL to give us an insight into foreign and defence policy”

Fox could clearly be seen as a controversial speaker but Corner said “I think that politics is a rough and tumble business and I don’t think it detracts from the fact that he’s a very experienced politician and will be a fascinating speaker to have at the society.”

Rumours as to whether Adam Werrity will also be attending are yet to be confirmed.

Dr Liam Fox will be at UCL on the 23rd October Pearson Lecture at 7pm
