UCL are calling Hong Kong exchange students back to the UK

They are offering to help with the cost of flights.

Many British Universities are calling back all students currently on exchange in Hong Kong.

The ongoing Hong Kong protests started in June against plans to allow extradition to mainland China, with critics fearing it could undermine judicial independence. Whilst the bill was withdrawn in September, demonstrations continue and now demand full democracy and an inquiry into police actions. Clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent, with police firing live bullets, protestors attacking officers, and throwing petrol bombs.

UCL, whilst not explicitly calling back students, have said that they 'advise students to leave Hong Kong if they wish and are offering our full support with travel arrangements.'

This comes as universities such as Sheffield and Warwick have instructed students to return to the UK as soon as they are able.

This news might leave some students wondering why UCL has decided not to recall all students from HK.
