SUSU elections are just around the corner with nominations opening on Saturday, and a week or so later we’ll see who thinks they can take on the job of running the Union. But for now, us lot at The Tab have kick-started the rumour mill to bring you who we think will be going for the top jobs. Will we be right? We’ll have to see on Friday 15th February when the candidates are officially announced…

Union President: The top dog of the Union, chairman of the board of trustees and ultimate BNOC.

    • Ben Anderson
    • Sophie Bradfield
    • David Gilani
    • Ellis Sims
    • Peter ‘Peewee’ Ward

VP Communities: This position has been dropped from welfare and now incorporates JCRs and sites.

  • James Brant
  • Oli Coles
  • Nicole Trengove

VP Democracy and Creative Industries: The person who seems to now do everything, from censoring controlling SUSU media, running Union Films, societies and Performing Arts, and enforcing democracy. We’re not too sure on the new title (or where the student consultation was in changing it from VP Communications to this…). It seems like quite a bit of work for one person to handle.

  • Alex Rogers
  • David Martin
  • Jon North

VP Education (formerly VP Academic Affairs): The Sabb who sorts out your lecturers when they step out of line.

  • Ridwan Barbhuiyan
  • David Mendoza-Wolfson
  • Dessie Nedyalkova

VP Engagement: Having been stripped of most responsibility, this Sabb might as well be referred to as ‘VP Fuck All’, although they will be in charge of RAG, student enterprise and volunteering. An interesting selection of candidates so far with two recent RAG officers and the PA officer in the line-up.

  • Fiona Cook
  • Claire Gilbert
  • Adam Moloney
  • Duncan Parker

VP Sports Development: This Sabb runs the AU, is responsible for sorting out Varsity and giving out the cash to clubs.

  • Sam Crabb
  • Kate Williams
  • Evan Whyte

VP Welfare: Hands out the condoms and works with the Advice Centre. Recent big welfare campaigns have focused on mental health and housing.

  • Jared Anderson
  • Sophie Brewer
  • Josh Cox
  • Josie Torrice
  • Becki Thomas

The Tab has heard of a few students (who will remain unnamed) that were planning on running in the Sabbatical elections this year but have since withdrawn. This could be because the ever troublesome politics within SUSU and is possibly a knock on effect from the complicated NUS referendum in December. Whatever the reason The Tab would encourage students to run in the upcoming elections, even if it is just for the banter.

Of course, we won’t have included everyone, so if you know of anyone we’ve missed out please drop us a comment below!
