Everything we know about the strikes at Southampton this year

The University of Southampton is set to take strike action from the 25th November, for a total of eight days.

The University and College Union (UCU) has formally notified their members at 60 UK universities to support strike action over the issues of pay and/or pension reform.

Strike action could disrupt the studies of more than a million students, according to union leaders.

Strike action will take place on 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 November 2019 and 2, 3, 4 December 2019.

There was an Industrial Action update on SUSSED

The Internal Communications GM said: "The University respects the right of trade union members to take industrial action and will provide clear policies to help colleagues understand how this will affect their pay and pensions.

"Our priority is to provide a world-class education for our students and in the event of a strike the University will do everything possible to minimise disruption to teaching and learning."

The University will work with SUSU and other colleagues

"We will work with SUSU and other colleagues throughout the University to put in place the arrangements necessary to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged by any industrial action and continue to receive a world-class education at Southampton."

The first waves of strikes will hit universities later this month

General secretary for UCU Jo Grady said: "The first wave of strikes will hit universities later this month unless the employers start talking to us seriously about how they are going to deal with rising pension costs and declining pay and conditions.

"Any general election candidate would be over the moon with a result along the lines of what we achieved last week. Universities can be in no doubt about the strength of feeling on these issues and we will be consulting branches whose desire to strike was frustrated by anti-union laws about reballoting."
