Sexy dancers cause a stir

It’s gettin’ (too) hot in here.

After a member of the Student Representative Council (SRC) aired concerns about the nature of Sin City’s “Sexy Hot Dancers,” the organisers appeared to remove them. However, Saturday 13th October saw their surprising reappearance…

Playing every Saturday night from 10pm until 2am in Venue 1, the Sin City club night includes outdoor shisha, a VIP section and a DJ flanked by said “Sexy Hot Dancers”.

According to Jules Findlay, Director of Events and Services, he discussed the issue of “Sexy Hot Dancers” with Sin City organisers after an SRC member expressed their discomfort at what could be interpreted as the objectification of the female body.

Jules told The Stand that he “took the concerns of the students to Sin City”, which is an external events company, and the organisers appeared to take the issue to heart. Last week the dancers were nowhere to be found.

This Saturday, however, the performers were back in full force. Hardeep Rupal, managing director of Sin City, told The Stand that they “cut back on expenses [of last week] by removing dancers, the raffle, and the Shisha Shaq” as the Kate Kennedy Opening Ball coincided with the event last week. He holds by his belief however, that the dancers are “an integral part of the Sin City event.”

The Stand has been told that in future, Sin City will be providing both male and female dancers in order to neutralise qualms about gender-equality. Rupal said that Sin City “encourage[s] the recruitment of male dancers,” but compared them to female DJs in that they are “few and far between.”

Though the dancers have made some feel uncomfortable, others see them as part of the ‘Club Night’ experience. One 2nd year, James, said, “without them, Sin City would just be Bop 2.0. Actually no, more like Bop 1.5.”
