Though it wasn’t the Oscar-esque ceremony St Andrews may have expected, the St Andrews’ humble (some might say, ‘rugged’) Union Bar won a coveted Silver “Best Bar None” award at a local Fife ceremony this month.

But the Best Bar None scheme is not about interior design, it is aimed at promoting responsible management in bars throughout Scotland, and the award won by Sandy MacKenzie, bar manager, demonstrates that they meet the highest standards in safety and customer service. One always receives one’s Messy Bomb with a smile.

The Co-ordinator for “Best Bar None”, Ashley Kellock, commented, “This is a brilliant result for the Students Association and for the university. It means that students and visitors can be assured of a warm welcome and a safe night out if they choose this award-winning venue”. St Andrews is reminded once again to be thankful not only for a bar holding everything from tequila slammers to bellinis in a can, but one with service leagues above its Lizard equivalents. What more could we ask for?
