The 2013 Leiden Ranking poll, a prestigious scientific performance indicator, has ranked St Andrews as fifth in the UK, first in Scotland, and 47th out of the 500 universities measured.

The poll measures the scientific performance of 500 universities worldwide, using data to indicate measurments of the scientific impact of universities as well as their involvment in scientific collaboration. These new rankings pull St Andrews up 24 points since last year, proving that the Vic wasn’t the only thing in St Andrews to recieve an upgrade in 2012.

Principal Louise Richardson said of the achievement, “St Andrews may be one of the world’s smaller research universities but demonstrably we have global impact as so many of our academics are producing important, recognised research.”

Leiden’s new rankings could bring good tidings for the 600th anniversary’s endowment fund, as Principal Richardson continued on to note, “as we celebrate 600 years of taking Scotland to the world, we are determined that Scotland’s first University should remain a critical international force and a means of strengthening Scotland’s contribution to matters of global concern.”
